Wigle Whiskey to Release New Ginger Whiskey
Wigle Whiskey has been on the cutting-edge of introducing innovative whiskey and craft cocktails to the libations scene since opening in Pittsburgh in 2012. Now, they’re at it again as they’ll be releasing Afterglow Ginger Whiskey February 12th thru 14th.
Made from Pennsylvania baby ginger and pot-distilled whiskey, Afterglow is spicy, warming and a great complement to a cold winter evening. It was developed in partnership with Chatham University’s Food Studies program and features locally-grown ginger and a custom multigrain whiskey.
Afterglow’s inspiration is derived from the unconventional love affair between a wealthy whiskey baron’s daughter and a poor, redheaded mill worker that led to the birth of Henry Clay Frick. The bottle’s label will reflect related imagery.
The three-day Pittsburgh release spans Valentine’s Day weekend. Simply stated, that means forget the chocolates this year…win your loved one’s heart with ginger whiskey!
The Ginger Whiskey Weekend festival will take place Friday through Sunday, February 12th – 14th. Friday’s festivities include a special event with Brooklyn Brewery at the Wigle distillery in the Strip that will have spiced beers, Ginger Whiskey cocktails, and tacos from Smoke Taqueria. Saturday and Sunday will feature whiskey samplings, activities, music, and food.

SWEET, SPICY, PENNSYLVANIA EXOTICISM
WIGLE’S AFTERGLOW GINGER WHISKEY DEBUTS THIS FEBRUARY
Approximately 900 x375ml bottles of Wigle’s Afterglow Ginger Whiskey will be released over the weekend of February 12th through 14th, 2016. Developed in partnership with Chatham University’s Food Studies program, the spirit follows the footsteps of Wigle’s Apple Whiskey and will be released on a seasonal basis.
About the whiskey:
The base whiskey of the spirit is distilled from a custom blend of multigrain whiskey. The whiskey, when pulled from barrels, was steeped with roasted baby ginger before being lightly sweetened with brown sugar syrup. The resulting spirit has a bright, lingering ginger spice, gently smoothing sweetness, and rich whiskey strength.
Even when using ginger- All Local is still the name of the game. Afterglow’s ginger was grown at Chatham University’s Eden Hall campus and the Grow Pittsburgh’s greenhouse at the Frick Art & Historical Society. Typically a tropical crop, ginger requires 11 months of high temperature soils to develop into a mature ginger plant. In a project headed up by Chatham University recent graduate Katie Walker, the development group successfully cultivated enough 6-month baby ginger for use in a local ginger whiskey.
A spicy inspiration:
In the 1840s, a tryst between a wealthy whiskey baron’s daughter and a poor redheaded mill worker produced Henry Clay Frick, future steel mogul. Their unconventional love story is the inspiration behind Wigle’s spicy-sweet Afterglow.
Ginger Whiskey Weekend:
Afterglow’s release is set for the weekend of February 12th through February 14th at the Strip District Distillery. Throughout the weekend, attendees will have the opportunity to taste the new spirit and learn about its development.
Friday, February 12th
On Friday, the weekend kicks off with a Spicy Soirée Valentine’s event hosted by Wigle and in partnership with Brooklyn Brewery. Attendees to the event will have the exclusive first samples of Ginger Whiskey, and enjoy an evening celebrating spice in spirits, beer, and food. Tickets are $35 and include 2 Ginger Whiskey cocktails, 2 spicy beers from Brooklyn Brewery, food from Smoke Taqueria, and Valentine’s Day card creating.
Saturday, February 13th (12-5 PM) and Sunday, February 14th (12-4 PM)
On Saturday and Sunday, Wigle will feature Ginger Whiskey sampling and cocktails. The festival is free and family friendly. On both days, the Proper Brick Oven mobile pizza truck will serve ginger-inspired pizza. On Sunday only, guests will have the opportunity to create Valentine’s Day cards and purchase chocolate and whiskey flights featuring whiskey truffles from Mon Amiee Chocolat in the Strip District.
