It’s a BIG Weekend at the Wigle Barrelhouse

If you know Wigle Whiskey like I do, you know they do things BIG. And this coming weekend is no exception.

Wigle is not only opening of their awesome outdoor Barrelhouse and Whiskey Garden on Friday night, they are also releasing their new Smoked Bourbon this weekend, too! And to make it extra special, they’ve got a full weekend of fun planned for you.

Smoked Bourbon Release & Barrelhouse Opening

BARREL-ROLLING, SMOKED BOURBON, AND A CELEBRATION OF SUMMER:
2016 BARRELHOUSE SEASON BEGINS ON APRIL 29TH

On April 29th, Wigle’s Northside Barrelhouse & Whiskey Garden will open for the 2016 season. Included in the jam-packed weekend is the 3rd Annual Barrel Roll, Barrelhouse Opening Party and Smoked Bourbon Release, a Duetschtown Music Festival fundraiser, and an after-party for the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon.

3rd Annual Barrel Roll:

At 5 PM on April 29th, the weekend will commence with a Barrel Roll spanning the distance between Wigle’s Strip District Distillery and Northside Barrelhouse. Participating organizations are tasked with building contraptions sturdy enough to cart an empty 10 or 15 gallon whiskey barrel along the route, and include Assemble Pittsburgh, GTECH Strategies, HackPGH, Penn Brewery, The Pittsburgh Glass Center, TechShop Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon’s Buggy Alumni Association. Along the way, the procession will stop at several Strip District and Spring Garden businesses for snacks and beer: La Prima Espresso, Penn Brewery, and a popcorn stop along the bridge.

Public attendees are encouraged to walk along the route and take part in the sampling along the way. The Roll will end at Wigle’s Barrelhouse at the start of the Opening Party and Smoked Bourbon Release. Organization’s contraptions will be displayed at the party to determine the winner of the 2016 Barrel Roll.

Smoked Bourbon Release and Barrelhouse Opening Party:

Both serving as the season re-opening and release of Wigle’s Smoked Bourbon, the party will begin at 6 PM with the arrival of the Barrel Roll procession and end at 9:30 PM. The party features an exclusive cask-tapping of a Smoked Bourbon barrel, specialty cocktails, live music from local band Brewer’s Row, and food from Franktuary food truck and the Brownstone Oven.

The party is free and family friendly. Cocktail passports can be purchased that include cask sampling and two signature cocktails.

About the Smoked Bourbon:

Distilled from a mash bill of malted barley, organic yellow corn, and cherry wood smoked malt, Smoked Bourbon is the third in Wigle’s line of bourbons and follows the Wapsie Valley Bourbon and Yellow Corn Bourbon. Built from 55% organic yellow corn balanced with malted barley, this bourbon’s a “barely legal” variety: bourbon whiskey is defined a lot of different ways, but the most noteworthy requirement is that the mash bill be not less than 51% corn. Corn has higher sugar content than rye, wheat or malted barley, which is good for yield, but contributes less flavor.

By keeping corn at a lower percentage, Wigle distillers have room to add more charismatic grains. In this case, mostly malted barley smoked over cherry wood, which contributes sweet, fruity notes, with the right amount of smoke and barbecue. Small amounts of caramel and pale malts add bread, toffee and caramel flavors.

On the nose, tasters will find find candy corn, banana and light smoke. On a sip, soft maltiness, caramel, and vanilla before a sweet smoke finish.

This bourbon’s doubled‐distilled and aged in brand-new, charred 15‐gallon barrels for at least 15 months before bottling at 92 proof. Wigle has produced just over 500 bottles.
