Southern Tier Welcomes Pittsburgh Brewers to Lakewood to Collaborate
This past summer, when news broke that Southern Tier Brewing Company was planning to open a brewpub on Pittsburgh’s North Shore, beer drinkers across our region went crazy (in a good way). Thanks to a consistent presence and quality product, Pittsburgh has become Southern Tier’s second-highest grossing sales market, second only to Buffalo, and has played a key role in the growth of craft beer throughout the Steel City.
And now that Southern Tier is on the verge of opening the doors to their first location beyond their pristine brewery in Lakewood, New York, they took a major step towards joining our city’s close-knit brewing community by hosting a massive collaboration brewing session at their brewery on Monday and Tuesday.
Brewers, owners, and representatives from several breweries across the Pittsburgh region made the trek north to Southern Tier, located approximately 30 minutes east of Erie, to network, mingle, share ideas, learn about brewing on a larger-scale system, and, ultimately, collaboratively create a beer that will be tapped when the new North Shore brewpub opens in the upcoming weeks.
The collaboration beer will be known as Speed Date, a Brown Ale brewed with orange and ginger that’s expected to weigh in somewhere in the 7% ABV range.
“It was a great experience getting to go to Southern Tier to work on this beer,” Nick Jones, brewer at soon-to-be-open Mindful Brewing, shared. “David (Harries) and Southern Tier showed the Pittsburgh brewing community a great time. My favorite part was getting to hang out with this fantastic brewing community that we’ve become. So many great minds and ideas were flowing, as well as a lot of beer.”
Southern Tier has become one of the most recognizable breweries in the business with a distribution footprint spanning the country, but they operate with a small brewpub mentality and utilize this philosophy with every beer they brew.
“Southern Tier’s approach to the brewpub is in line with what we are as a brewing community: small batches and more than willing to push the envelope,” Nick continued. “They’ll be a great fit with our community and a great resource for the ‘little guys’ moving forward.”
The new Southern Tier brewpub is located on Pittsburgh’s North Shore between PNC Park, Stage AE and Heinz Field. Look for an announcement on their grand opening in the upcoming weeks.
