Brewing ‘Burgh: Bootlegging and Lawlessness Leads to One Amazing Local Craft Brewery

Brewing ‘Burgh is an inside look at craft beers created, consumed, and celebrated right here in the heart of the Steel City. With the rise of the craft beer scene in Pittsburgh, these beers bring brand new meaning to the term “City of Champions.”

Craft beer is all about originality. The ones who make their mark in this world are the ones that set themselves apart from their competition by branding themselves with great beer, a great name, and an unwillingness to compromise when it comes to their product.

When you focus on those three factors, you needn’t look any further than Helltown Brewing, located in Mt. Pleasant, PA. Without question, they’re delivering great beer on a consistent basis. Plus, they’ve got one of the coolest name themes around. But more on that in a minute.

It’s been this blogger’s experience that, no matter the size of the brewery and or the number of different styles they produce, there’s always at least one beer that makes me say, “good, but not for me.” In the case of Helltown, I can honestly say you could put any of their beers in front of me and I would drink them with a smile on my face. This speaks highly to Helltown’s moniker of never sacrificing quality for convenience.

Helltown Brewing was started in 2011 when a small group of home brewers decided to take a weekend hobby and push it to the next level.
Like most craft breweries, they brew with passion, dedication, and attention to detail. The result is a great product for you and I to enjoy, with a a wide range of styles all made with the freshest ingredients.

The name ‘Helltown Brewing’ was born from the historical roots tied to its birthplace. In the late 1700s, the area that would later become Mount Pleasant was a hotbed for whiskey production and distribution. As bootlegging and lawlessness spread through the area, this quiet little community was given the handle “Helltown.” That is one damn cool story, whether you’re into history or not!

The name Helltown opens up a world of possibilities when it comes to beer names, and boy did these guys run with that notion. There are so many elements connected to craft beers that make them great, but one of the best elements are the names. You can look at any craft brewery and find at least one beer whose name gets stuck in your head. With Helltown, their beer names go with their title perfectly. Check it out…

  • Perverse Stout

  • Mischievous Brown Ale

  • Rapture IPA

  • Extra Sinful Bitter

  • Idle Hands (my personal favorite…)

  • Purgatory

  • Reaper’s Harvest

Try and argue with me on that.

Helltown is still relatively new to the craft beer scene in Pittsburgh, but their popularity has spread quickly as they approach their 3-year anniversary. With continued dedication and unique creations, we are certain to see more great things from Helltown Brewing in the weeks and months ahead. If you haven’t had the pleasure to wrap your hands around any of their offerings, keep your eyes peeled for Helltown beers at your favorite bars today!
